Police arrest rape suspect after victim identifies man

Police have arrested a man suspected of raping a woman in front of her boyfriend.

The incident happened in Lindelani on October 10, at around 5am.

“The victim (who is in her 20s) and her boyfriend were sleeping in their shack, when a man pointed a firearm through the open window while two others forced the door open,” said Brig Poobalan Subbiah, Benoni SAPS acting cluster commander.

“The suspects demanded money, before assaulting the boyfriend and forcing him to lie down,”

Subbiah said two of the three suspects then took turns to rape the woman.

They stole a speaker, mirror and three cell phones to the total value of R5 000, after which they fled on foot.

Capt Alie van den Berg, of the Benoni cluster task team, said his members followed up on information on the day of the incident and drove around Lindelani – with the rape victim -looking for the perpetrators.

While driving in the area, she recognised a man who she said raped her.

Police arrested the 20-year-old and charged him with house robbery and rape.

The two remaining men are still at large.
