Local designer is making a name

Sarah Madingwana has always been creative at heart.

The Daveyton resident, who is the founder of The Design Parliament (TDP), has been invited to showcase her designs in the Nairobi Fashion Week, in Kenya, during November.

She started the fashion house in 2013, after completing her matric at Wordsworth High School.

TDP is a fashion house with different artistic designs, such as fine art, photography and branding.

“When it comes to clothing designs, we cater for any woman who lives according to the principles of elegance, class, sophistication and a corporate look,” said Madingwana.

She said she has always been interested in creative art, but she never thought she would find herself in the fashion space.

Her late grandmother, Mirriam Mohlonetsi, has always been her fashion icon, as she always preached the importance of looking ”like a lady”.

At just 21, Madingwana has showcased her designs on a number of local runways and has also received an Ekurhuleni Mayoral Award, in the category Youth Owned Business on the Move.

TDP was also part of the Seventh African Youth and Governance Conference, at the Pan African Parliament.

Madingwana explained that she was introduced to the Nairobi Fashion Week by Vusi Ndinisa, co-founder of Afrikanswiss (Africa’s premier denim brand based in South Africa).

“I’m really excited about showcasing in Nairobi,” said Madingwana.

“I feel really honoured and I appreciate the grace God grants daily.”

Apart from being a designer, she is also currently enrolled to study for a Bachelor of Law degree at the University of South Africa.

She is also a public speaker and deputy chairperson of the Daveyton Book Club.

Madingwana plans to open a retail store and run her own magazine in the near future.

The youngster advises the youth to do what they love.

Madingwana needs to raise funds before she can fly to Kenya.
