He’s now a ‘super teacher’

Matthew Hains's pupils refer to him as a "super teacher", after he recently won the 2015 Tech Teacher of the Year Award.

The Rynfield resident is a Computer Applications Technology teacher at Woodlands International College, in Boksburg.

Hains entered a competition held by the Internet Service Provider’s Association (ISPA), which teachers from all over the country entered.

The competition entailed giving recognition to companies or people who have contributed to the growth and development of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry.

Hains took a leap of faith and submitted his entry in June, not knowing what to expect.

On September 10, he heard that he had won the 2015 Tech Teacher of the Year Award at the ISPA awards ceremony, in Stellenbosch.

“I thought I would get into the top 10, but I didn’t expect to win,” he said.

His submission was a website called Tech Teachers, that he started in 2013.

“The website was created as a platform where teachers connect and interact with each other,” said the Rynfield resident.

“Teachers share information, assessments, tests and projects related to technology.”

With 1 000 teachers currently using the website, it has spread to different parts of South Africa.

Hains finds it fulfilling to watch the growth of his website and said winning the competition has opened many doors for him.

His victory has made him positive about his future in technology and teaching.
