UPDATE: Stolen cash-in-transit box found abandoned in Lakefield

The cash-in-transit box, which was stolen during the Lakeside Mall robbery, on September 28, has been found abandoned in Lakefield.

The box was found by a member of the public on Sunnyside Avenue, on Tuesday, September 29.

According to Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, the box was empty when it was found.

“It is alleged that the box’s panic button was not working when the G4S Security guard tried to press it during the robbery on September 28,” said Essakjee.

Essakjee said the box had a pin section and, when it was found, it did not seem to have been forcefully opened.

The cash-in-transit robbery took place at the Lakeside Mall’s Truworths store.

The G4S employee was leaving the store, after collecting money, when he was ambushed by seven men, who stole his firearm and the box with an undisclosed amount of money.

A cash-in-transit case was opened at the Benoni Police Station on September 28.

The investigation of the case has been taken over by the SAPS Organised Crime Unit.
