Explosion posed no danger

The explosion heard in Benoni on September 22 was caused by a build-up of fumes in the petrol tanks of old cars at the The New Reclamation Group metal recycling plant, in Dunswart.

“This is a very unusual occurrence and does not pose any danger to the community,” said the company’s media relation’s officer, Stephen Laufer.

“The New Reclamation Group regrets the disturbance and apologises to residents near its plant.

“We continue to work towards ensuring that incidents such as this one during the evening – however rare they are – can be avoided in future.”

Laufer told the City Times nobody was hurt.

“We have been able to ascertain that there was, indeed, a small explosion at the site, and that the agreed communication with community representatives kicked in immediately on Wednesday (September 23) evening,” he said.

Benoni residents commented on the Benoni City Times Facebook page following the incident.

The bang was heard as far as Crystal Park and the Benoni Agricultural Holdings, according to the posts.
