Alert reader tips off police on suspect’s whereabouts

A man was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court today (September 25) on a charge of theft, after he allegedly stole money from people withdrawing cash from a Northmead ATM.

Police arrested the 31-year-old suspect two weeks after the City Times ran an article asking the public to supply police with information on the man’s whereabouts.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the suspect was arrested in Rynfield, following a tip-off from a community member who saw the photograph in the City Times.

Police had warned the community of a person who was scamming people at an ATM on Fifth Avenue, Northmead on June 4.

The bank card of a man was grabbed from the ATM while he was busy withdrawing cash.

The suspect was charged with one count of theft.

Fraud charges may also be added.
