Teen robbed by school pupils

A 14-year-old schoolboy is refusing to miss his exams after he was robbed and beaten by two other school pupils and left lying in the street on Friday (September 18).

The teenager was walking to a taxi rank in the CBD with three fellow pupils, when two males approached them on Wordsworth Road, Farrarmere.

“The suspects attacked the victim and robbed him of his cellphone,” said Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS communication officer.

“One of the suspects was armed with a knife.”

The police did not want to disclose which schools the victim or suspects were from.

Hannes du Plessis, principal of Belvedere School, confirmed one of the pupils at the school was attacked and robbed on the day in question, but said he could not comment further.

At the time of publishing, it was still unclear which school the suspects attend.

SAPS were called in by CMS, who had found the victim lying on the ground.

An ambulance arrived and the teen was taken to hospital.

CMS informed the victim’s father of the incident, who rushed to the scene.

“My son was lying there crying when I arrived,” said Lucky Memela, the boy’s father.

“I am very cross, they (suspects) should stay in jail, if they are released they will just do it again.

“My son is coping, but he is still in pain.

“I told him he could stay at home for a while but as he’s writing exams, he wanted to go to school and do the work.”

Memela said his son, a Grade Seven pupil, is picked up by a paid driver every day.

The driver, however, failed to arrive on Friday and the boy had to walk some distance to the taxi rank, which is when the incident occurred.

The suspects were arrested and taken to the Benoni Police Station, but could not be detained as they are both minors.

They will appear in court, but a date could not be confirmed at the time of publishing.
