Local pole dancer finishes second in World Championships

Benita Bouwer, from Pole Physiques Studio Benoni, finished in second place at the World Pole Sports Championships recently.

The championship was held at Crystal Palace, London, on July 25 (preliminaries) and 26 (finals).

Fifty-two countries were represented by 142 athletes, and South Africa sent three athletes, including Tammy Smith from Pole Physiques Studio Greymont (started with Bouwer in Benoni) and Bouwer.

Smith competed in the Senior Women’s Elite and Bouwer in the Masters over-40 division.

Bouwer ended in second place and was recently nominated by Pole World News as being the most positive role model in the pole sport and aerial community.

“What a tremendous honour to wear the green and gold and represent one’s country,” said Bouwer.

“As with any other sport you are pushing your body beyond its physical limits and relying on a good, psychological mind to back you up.”

She was the highest scoring athlete at the National Pole Sports Competition 2015, in April, and is ranked, on points over the year, first in the world in the Masters over-40 division for 2015.

“At Pole Physiques Studio we want to encourage men, women and children to take up this progressive form of exercise,” Bouwer commented.

“Here one will get pushed to the maximum in the most nurturing and fun way.”
