Rowing for the top prize

The Concrete Society of South Africa hosted their annual concrete boat competition on Saturday, September 12.

The competition included students from the University of Pretoria (Tuks) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and the event took place at the Sailing Club, at Homestead Dam.

Roelof Jacobs, chairperson of the inland region of the Concrete Society of South Africa, said the competition is held annually and allows construction industry experts to interact with engineering students.

The majority of the students from Tuks and UJ were second and third year engineering students.

They prepared for the competition by building their boats, which can take up to weeks to complete.

On the day, they rowed their boats on the dam and competed to win prizes.

The students were rewarded for the construction of their boats and for rowing.
