Man shoots suspected hijackers on Pretoria Road

Two suspected hijackers are recovering in the Tembisa Hospital after they were shot by the owner of the car they hijacked.

An Isuzu bakkie was hijacked at a property in Eva Road, Fairleads on September 19.

Benoni SAPS acting cluster commander, Brig Poobalan Subbiah, said the driver of the vehicle (who is not the owner of the bakkie) was hijacked at 6.30pm.

The hijackers took the vehicle along with cellphones and cash.

The vehicle was later found abandoned at President Hoffman Road, in Rynfield.

Subbiah said the owner of the bakkie was informed of the incident and tracked the suspects’ whereabouts from one of the phones that was stolen.

He traced the men and found them driving in another car along Pretoria Road.

The passenger then pointed a firearm at the owner of the hijacked car.

Subbiah said he shot at the suspects and injured both of them.

Both suspects were arrested and the gun used in the hijacking and cell phones stolen was recovered.

The suspects are under police guard at the Tembisa Hospital.

They will be charged with hijacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted murder.
