Looking at ‘Benoni’s Mountain’ from the sky
"Benoni's Mountain" is quickly being reduced in size.
Anton Koen, of No Jack Vehicle Tracking, has taken several photos of the dump since the City Times ran an article, in July, on its gradual disappearance from the skyline.
Koen said the article encouraged him to document the Benoni landmark’s demise with a drone.
The Kleinfontein Mine Dump is set to disappear within the next few years.
David Viljoen, of the Benoni Gold Mining Company, which owns the mining rights to the mine dump, told the City Times in July that the gold dust is being sold.
He said the whole dump will be sold off in the next three to five years.
Many residents support the dump’s removal.
Koen said he hopes the Danie Taljaard Park will be safe and easily accessible to the public once the area is clear of the dump.
