Glen Orritt, ER24 JHB East spokesperson, said paramedics arrived on scene at around 10pm last night.
The victim, a man in his 20s, was apparently in the cemetery – where he is believed to live – when a gunman approached him and at least one of his friends.
The gunman allegedly tried to rob the victim and shot him once in the back.
The victim’s friend told paramedics he carried his friend to the roadside on Main Reef Road.
Paramedics were called to the scene and transported the critically injured man to the Tambo Memorial Hospital.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said a case of attempted murder has been opened.
No arrests had been made at the time of publishing.
