Love is still in the air

What you do to the left, you must do to the right, and this best describes the bond that Conrad (82) and Rose (79) Froneman share.

The love is evident as they finish each other’s sentences and correct one another on some of the history they have shared in their 60 years of marriage.

The pair celebrated their 60th anniversary on September 10.

With their life deeply rooted in Benoni, they reminisce about the good old days, when Benoni was a different town to the city it is today.

After the couple had previously met at a mutual friend’s party, a local dance advert with Rose’s name in it, placed in the City Times, gave Conrad the courage to call her and ask her out on a date.

“I don’t think she was expecting me to take her where I did for our first date,” Conrad laughed as he thought about that outing.

Thus, their romance started at the speedway in Dunswart.

On December 4, 1954, the couple got engaged and, a year later, on September 10, they were married in the Central Methodist Church, in Benoni.

After a few years of marriage and the birth of their daughter, Pamela Boardman, in 1960, the couple decided to immigrate to Canada in 1962.

While they were there, the Fronemans welcomed their second daughter, Lesley Bertstrom, in 1962, before moving back to South Africa in 1963.

With the little money they had, they managed to buy a new home in Rynfield, where they lived until moving to their home in Alphen Park, where they have stayed for 31 years.

The Fronemans use the phrase ”exceptionally blessed ” to describe the life they have lived.

Conrad said: “I think my nickname should be ‘good fortune’ because, even through the tough times, I would always find a job and provide for my family.”

Sticking together through it all, the secret to the longevity of their marriage is not arguing, trusting and having confidence in each other, sharing everything and, most important, communication.

”The things I love the most about my husband is his honesty and his far-sightedness,” said Rose

And what he loves is how they have been comfortable around each other; they have always ”clicked”.

Conrad said: ”We are best friends, she is my dove with a broken wing and I must take care of her.”

Reading, travelling and watching British TV series are common interests that the couple enjoy.

The Fronemans have no regrets about how their lives turned out and look forward to creating more memories together.
