Woman (101) overcome on birthday

You'd think there would be a lot to talk about if you have lived for 101 years, but not for Rynfield resident Katherine Pitcher.

The Rynpark One frail care resident celebrated her 101st birthday at the facility on September 11, two days before her actual birthday.

More than 30 residents of the frail care section, along with staffers and management of Rynpark, joined the celebration.

A cake was baked for Pitcher, guests were given cupcakes which they could decorate themselves, and non-alcoholic champagne washed down the sweet stuff.

The City Times featured a story on Pitcher’s 100 year birthday, last year.

Pitcher, who is also fluent in isiZulu, was born in Umtali (now called Mutare), Zimbabwe, on September 13, 1914.

Her parents were Stephen Walter Pitcher, who was a colonel in the British army, and Ella da Gama, who was born in Messina.

She is the eldest of eight children.

This Rynpark resident for the past 20 years worked as a nurse at the Florence Nightingale Hospital, in Hillbrow, many years ago.

She was married to Frank Christian, but they were separated years ago.

Pitcher did not speak at her birthday celebration and, according to matron Lena Koen, she was overcome by all the fuss being made over her.

Staffers and guests sang happy birthday to Pitcher, who remained with head bowed, in her wheelchair.
