EMPD spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, said the members saw several people engaging in mining activities and upon approaching the location, eight suspects ran and disappeared into the dark and dangerous mine shafts.
“The metro police seized two buckets full of gold dust, eight large dishes filled with gold dust concentrate, two pandookas (a bowl used for sifting gold particles), acidic substances, spades, hammers and chisels,” added Kgasago.
All equipments confiscated was booked in at the Benoni Police Station.
No arrests have been made.
Police and EMPD are monitoring the hot spots.
