Barcelona community’s needs are heard

The Democratic Alliance (DA) held a public meeting in Barcelona, Etwatwa, on August 23, with the aim of giving residents an opportunity to speak out against drugs and crime.

The meeting was conducted by Gauteng Community Safety spokesperson Michele Clarke and Katlehong constituency head, Lebo More.

According to Clarke, issues of high crime rates and drug addiction were raised by the community members.

“It was also mentioned that the community does not receive assistance from the Etwatwa Police Station,” she added.

“I will be taking up the behaviour of the Etwatwa Police Station towards the Barcelona community with the member of the mayoral committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Vivian Chauke, as well as the Provincial Police Committee.”

Residents signed a petition to ask the government to step in and deal with the scourge of crime and drugs in the area.

The DA has raised the plight of the people with the Premier of Gauteng, David Makhura.

The premier’s office said Makhura did engage with the community and that they have committed themselves to finding lasting solutions to issues of housing, water, safety and unemployment.

Clarke said the DA will continue to monitor progress and hold the Premier and Ekurhuleni to their respective commitments.
