The Benoni SPCA commented on this and gave the following tips on such situations:
- The public could interact with the seller, if willing, and purchase the animal and bring it to the Benoni SPCA.
At the SPCA, the animal will be checked and, if all is well, it will be put in their holding kennels in case it may have been stolen.
If it is not claimed within seven days, it will be put up for adoption.
- Upon spotting a person selling animals on the side of the road, take down as many details as possible, such as the physical address or the nearest corner, and a brief description of the seller.
Phone this through to the SPCA office on 011 894 2814/5 and they will dispatch someone as soon as possible to collect the animal.
- If you are unsure of a situation and feel unsafe, do not challenge the seller, rather leave them and phone the details through to the SPCA.
