The collision occurred at the intersection of CR Swart Drive and Pretoria Road, Kempton Park, around 6pm.
Benoni SAPS were unable to comment at the time of going to press, but the Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, said the cause of the accident was still unknown.
According to Mtshali, the police vehicle in which the officer was driving was a BMW 1 Series.
The officer sustained minor injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.
The driver of the other car was not injured, but both vehicles were badly damaged.
A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened at the Kempton Park Police Station.
