State offers to pay in Macia case

Ilse de Lange, The Citizen reports: The South African government has finally had a change of heart and has now offered to compensate Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia’s family.

Lawyer José Nascimento, who had a watching brief from Macia’s family and the Mozambican government, welcomed the conviction of eight former Daveyton policemen for Macia’s murder.

“There has been some type of vindication, but it’s not a happy day for me because a life was unnecessarily lost, caused by police brutality and started from a silly traffic violation that could easily have been resolved without having to resort to the type of violence that was used upon a defenseless human being,” said Nascimento.

“Justice has been done, but justice doesn’t bring back Mido Macia.”

Nascimento said where the government initially disputed every single aspect of the family’s R6.5 million summons, they have since had a change of heart and now wanted to settle the claim.
