Bringing change into the community

Providing a helping hand in the community takes dedication, patience and the ability to be empathetic towards people in need.

Founder of Ekukhanyeni Day Care and Community Centre, Sello Kube, started an initiative to provide assistance to community members who are in need.

”This work is in my blood, when I see someone struggling, I can’t even eat,” said Kube.

The centre was started in 2011 and operates in the community of Mayfield Extension Six.

Trying to accommodate a variety of people with different needs is a big responsibility, because people come from different backgrounds, Kube explained.

Children from broken homes, people with disabilities, people facing addiction and the youth not being able to further their studies due to finances are some of the types of situations that Kube and his team encounter.

”People have to help each other, charity is for helping others in need and not for your own benefit,” the founder said.

The non-profit organisation works closely with the public protector, the police, the municipality and the courts, in order to provide people with the necessary resources and the information that they need to resolve their problems.

”Ekurhuleni is rich with talent, but we need to help the youth reach their goals and not bring them down,” said Kube.

“They need to be connected to the right channels in order for them to achieve their goals.”

Kube is fond of his community and sees great potential in Mayfield.

He wants to be a positive contribution to the Mayfield community, having previously worked with Mncedisi Myeni, who was struggling to get a wheelchair.

Kube believes people with disabilities should be taught skills to improve their way of living.

”I think they should give people with disabilities a second chance, through skills development and education, a person should not be considered useless or less human because they are disabled,” he said.

Kube hopes to one day build a community centre where community members can go when they are faced with hard times in their lives.
