Women unite against abuse

"Power to the women, both men and women have power but do we as women know we have that power?"

Those are the words of Andiswa Hlengwa, student psychologist at iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre.

On August 22, the Crystal Park SAPS, EMPD, iThemba Rape and Trauma Support Centre, together with the community of Crystal Park, walked through the streets of the suburb to spread the message against women and child abuse.

The theme for the day was “Power to Women”.

Hlengwa explained the aim of the walk and the importance of spreading the message to people to the 60-odd participants.

“It starts from the mind; the minute we realise in our minds that we have power we can do anything that we want to do,” said Hlengwa.

“When we hurt in our hearts, we quickly need to go fix our minds, because we are not going to make good decisions with broken hearts.”

Women were urged to break the the silence on abuse.

“Abuse or domestic violence is not only physical,” said Hlengwa.

“It’s about time that, as women, we start acknowledging the physiological part of abuse that happens to our emotions.

“As women, we need to sit down and have a conversation on how we remind each other about the power we possess and what we do with that power.”

Crystal Park SAPS social crime prevention officer Sgt Lerato Mopeli thanked the community for coming together to help the police to spread the message against women and child abuse.
