Mother reunited with kidnapped child

A mother was reduced to tears when she was reunited with her month-old baby boy, who had been snatched at an Etwatwa clinic in July.

Bandile was returned to his mother, Precious Moyo (24) on August 20.

A 19-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the abduction.

The incident occurred at the Phillip Moyo Clinic, on July 28, at around 1pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said Moyo took her newborn baby to the clinic for a check-up and was approached by a woman pretending to be a volunteer at the facility.

“The woman said the victim must accompany her into the clinic to get pain tablets,” said Sekele.

“She showed the mother where to wait for her.

“The abductor entered one of the rooms and returned with the tablets, gave them to the victim, and showed her another room, telling her she must register there to get tablets regularly.”

While the mother of the child was in the queue, she started experiencing pain.

Sekele said the bogus volunteer offered to hold the baby boy and later disappeared with the child.

Moyo told the City Times she was doubtful she’d ever see her child again.

“It was so difficult; it was painful,” she said.

“I didn’t think I would ever see him alive.

“I was stressed every day; I thought I would go insane.

“I was not eating or sleeping and I had a lot of stress.”

The mother of two said she barely slept the night her child returned home.

She dozed off every now and then, only to awake to cast an eye over the baby.

Benoni SAPS communications officer Const Zunickha Essakjee said the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit left no stone unturned to recover the baby.

The woman believed to have abducted the child was detained at the Benoni Police Station and was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on August 24.

She is facing a charge of kidnapping and fraud.
