Police deliberately dragged Macia, state argues

Ilse de Lange, The Citizen reports: The eight Daveyton policemen who dragged Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia behind a police van did so deliberately, using the van as “their weapon of choice”, the state has argued.

Prosecutor Charles Mnisi argued that Macia was deliberately handcuffed to the van and intentionally dragged because he resisted arrest and was then further assaulted in the cells.

All the accused had foreseen he could be injured and die and should be convicted of murder, he said in the North Gauteng High Court yesterday (August 18).

Macia, who was arrested for obstructing traffic, died alone in a police cell hours after being dragged through the streets in full view of the public.

He had blunt force injuries to his private parts and extensive head and internal injuries, which resulted in a lack of oxygen that led to his death.

Mnisi argued the accused were all aware of the dragging and had a professional and moral obligation to stop it, but did nothing.

He said Macia was dragged for a very long distance and was hooked to the van in a very painful manner, but none of the policemen even bothered to ask him how he was.
