The two-vehicle accident occurred near the Atlas Road off ramp, when travelling towards Johannesburg.
“Netcare 911 paramedics and other services arrived at the scene and found that two vehicles had collided head-on,” said Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann.
“Upon assessment of the occupants from both vehicles, paramedics found that a man travelling in one of the vehicles was entrapped and sustained critical injuries.”
While fire services were extricating the man from the car, it caught fire.
A helicopter was called to fly the man to hospital.
Upon assessment of the occupants from the second vehicle, paramedics found that a man died during the accident, while a second man sustained serious injuries.
The seriously injured man was transported to hospital.
A source told the City Times that one of the vehicles drove on the highway into oncoming traffic when the accident happened.
The crash is being investigated.
