Schools close doors amid water woes

Benoni Junior School requested pupils to stay home today, as the school has been crippled by the water interruption affecting Western Extension and Lakefield for 24 hours.

The school’s office manager, Ina Labuschagne, said the school has been unable to flush toilets and had to use buckets filled with water from the school’s swimming pool to replenish the toilet systems.

Labuschagne said SMSes were sent to the parents of the 800 pupils this morning, to notify them to keep their children at home.

She added that the incident has disrupted the school and the parents.

“When we called they (parents) were stressed because they were at work and had to arrange for their children to be fetched,” said Labuschagne.

“Some of the parents don’t have people to look after their children.”

The school’s staff members are still at work and are using water they brought from home.

Benoni West School also asked pupils to stay home today.

It is unclear when water will be restored to the suburbs.

The leak is being attended to, but a snag was encountered, as the pipe intended to remedy the leak was not suitable for the existing pipe’s diameter.
