Former cop denies Macia murder allegations

Ilse de Lange, The Citizen reports: The policeman who dragged Mozambican taxi driver, Mido Macia, through the streets of Daveyton with a police van thought Macia was inside, he told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday, August 12.

“All I wanted to do was to get out of that place,” said former Const Lungisa Gwababa.

Macia, who was arrested for obstructing traffic, died alone in a cell hours after he was dragged behind the van.

The state alleges Gwababa and seven of his former colleagues had murdered Macia by deliberately dragging him behind the van and then further assaulting him in the police cells despite the fact he was already injured.
