It is reported that the shooting began as early as 5.30am.
Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the suspected illegal miners threw explosives at the EMPD.
There is currently heavy police presence in the area.
At the time of publishing, police could not say whether anyone had been injured.

Meanwhile, the bodies of five suspected illegal miners were found on August 8.
Four were found off Daveyton Road with gunshot wounds to the head, while the fifth body was found near the Putfontein Road exit, off the N12 highway.
