Four men arrested after laundry is robbed

Four men between the ages of 18 and 33, were arrested shortly after robbing a laundry in Ampthill Avenue, in the Benoni CBD, on August 8.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said it is alleged that one of the suspects pretended to have come to do his laundry, as he was carrying a plastic bag.

“He rang the bell at the door and the woman working there opened the door for him, and suddenly the other three robbers also entered,” she added.

“One man, armed with a firearm, pointed it at the woman and ordered people inside the laundry not to make any noise.”

Suspects fled the scene with two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The four suspects ran towards Prince’s Avenue, and were spotted by the SAPS Rapid Railway Unit, who were patrolling the area and chased after them.

The SAPS members arrested the men and recovered the firearm used in the robbery.

A case of business robbery has been opened and one suspect has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

All the suspects were detained at the Benoni Police Station and are expected to appear at the Benoni Magistrate Court on August 11.
