Sewage leaks into conservancy

A sewage leak, which is flowing into the Korsman Conservancy, may be placing the wildlife and immediate environment at risk.

The source of the leak is a manhole on the corner of Edward Street and Victoria Avenue, in Western Extension.

Sewage runs from the manhole into the storm water drain, which then flows into the Korsman Pan.

Jane Trembath, chairperson of the Korsman Conservancy, said the sewage leak has been reported to the municipality and there has been no response.

She has received three different reference numbers, one for each time she has reported the matter to the municipality.

Trembath has also approached Ward 28’s Clr Mary Goby, who has also had other complaints about the manhole.

Goby sent an email to the municipality and has, as yet, had no response.

”What is Ekurhuleni doing to help, because sewage is a health hazard?” said Goby.

Both Trembath and Goby are concerned with the continuous damage that the sewage may be causing.

Trembath cannot clearly define the amount of damage that has been caused thus far, but said the leak may have a negative effect on the frogs in the pan.

”One of the effects would be on the frogs,” she explained.

”Frogs have thin skins and absorb the toxins from the water.”

The water has not been tested at this stage, but residents have also complained about the smell when walking or running around the pan.

Trembath said a representative from the department of water and sanitation went to inspect the area on Monday (August 3).

Her main concern is the effect that the sewage will have on the Korsman Bird Sanctuary, as it is an environmentally sensitive area.

The City Times requested comment from the municipality, but had not received a response at the time of going to print.
