Artists invited to enter Thami Mnyele competition

The City of Ekurhuleni will be hosting the 28th instalment of the nationally acclaimed Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards.

Artists are invited to submit their entries for this year’s contemporary fine art competition from August 18 to 20.

Entries can be submitted at the Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre, Mooifontein Road, Birchleigh North in ,Kempton Park between 9am and 7pm.

Submissions may also be made at the following satellite venues:

  • Springs Art Gallery on August 18 and 19, between 9am and 7pm.
  •  Rhoo Hlatshwayo Art Centre in Daveyton, on August 18, between 9am and 4pm.
  • Boksburg Library Auditorium on August 19, between 9am and 4pm.

A non-refundable fee will be charged for each art work entered.

“Art is a unique form of expression and, as the City of Ekurhuleni, we endeavour to afford our citizens a platform to express themselves in a skilful way,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni spokesperson.

Gadebe said the initiative was aimed at honouring the renowned revolutionary artist Thami Mnyele.

The adjudication process will be facilitated by Les Cohn, Richman M Buthelezi, Nontobeko Ntombela, John Fleetwood and Noko Mello.

The following prize money will be awarded to winners in the following categories:

  • First prize R40 000
  • Ekurhuleni prize R30 000
  • Multi and new media merit award R7 500
  • Painting merit award R7 500
  • Art on paper merit award R7 500
  • Sculpture merit award R7 500
