Detective ‘never saw Macia being dragged’

A former Daveyton detective today (August 5) insisted he never saw Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia being dragged behind a police van and portrayed himself as Macia’s victim, in the North Gauteng High Court.

Former Detective WO Meshack Malele testified that Macia had become aggressive after being reprimanded for blocking traffic with his taxi.

He testified that Macia had insulted him by referring to “my mother’s private parts”, punched and slapped him and then somehow managed to get hold of his service pistol.

He then heard a shot, saw his colleague, Thamsanqa Ngema, pointing a firearm at Macia, after which Macia handed over the firearm.

According to Malele, he left Ngema at the scene with Macia and took Macia’s taxi to drive to the police station to get back-up because Macia could have killed him and the crowd around them was threatening and might also kill them on the spot.
