Falls Spar celebrates three decades

It was 30 years ago when the late Stratos Tzanos, with his brother Basil and their cousin Jimmy, opened a branch of the growing supermarket chain in Benoni.

When they first opened the Falls Spar, it was a smaller store but grew from strength to strength.

The Falls Superspar today celebrates their 30th birthday.

Falls Superspar manager, Alexi Tzanos said the story of their success is quite simple and can be best attributed to their guiding principle, to provide the people of Benoni with the best service possible.

“In 2000 my later father and I took over the store, times were really tough then as we made huge efforts to improve and grow the shop,” said Tzanos.

“My dad and I would occasionally bump heads in those tough times but we could always sit down afterwards and enjoy a cup of coffee together.”

In June 2011, Stratos died and his son Alexi was left with the responsibility of running the business.

“It wasn’t easy, but I was never alone and I must thank my wife Christina Tzanos, my brother Chris Tzanos, my sister Areti Cavalerous as well as my two senior managers Stephan Erasmos and Andrea Herodotou,” he said.

“I would like to thank Hettie Swanepoel and Gisela Fouche for their constant loyalty, as well as numerous staff members who have been with us from the very beginning.

“I also extend my thanks to Spar South Rand for their ongoing leadership and support, our longstanding suppliers for all their services and lastly to all our loyal customers who have stood by us through thick and thin, they made us the success we are today.”
