School honoured by royal visit

Teachers at Actonville Primary School still thought they were in a deep dream on Tuesday, following a visit by His Serene Highness (HSH) Prince Albert II of Monaco.

“We are in awe,” said Actonville Primary School headmistress Venessa Moodley.

“My teachers still feel that they are dreaming.”

The prince visited the school on Monday evening, to officially launch the Philips Community Light Centre at the school.

Philips Lighting Southern Africa and The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation partnered to make the centre, which is one of only two in South Africa, a reality..

Moodley said Enver Adamjee and Firhad Ally donated the walling around the field and the soccer posts, respectively.

The prince cut a ribbon on Monday evening to officially open the soccer field, which will be illuminated by solar lights.

He posed for photographs with two soccer teams teams, placed the ball on the centre circle and then the game began.

The school and its 1 284 pupils (600 of whom are indigent) will benefit from the soccer field, as it will be hired out to generate additional revenue for the school.

Moodley, who has been the head of Actonville Primary since 2011, said the school has over 25 partnerships with people who run various projects and who donate items and time to meet its needs.

She said the school believes in itself.

“We dream with our eyes open because we see it (change) in reality,” she added.
