Uproar over Bunny Park — park clean-up shocks volunteer

A number of dead bunnies were allegedly found at the Bunny Park, during the weekly community clean-up on Sunday (July 26).

Tania Forrest-Smith, a Northmead resident, said the group, made up of Benoni volunteers, found 60 dead bunnies at the park.

“The conditions are bad there; I thought things would be better after last week’s clean-up, but when we returned this Sunday, things were just as bad,” said Forrest-Smith.

“Sick bunnies are taken from the park, treated and given up for adoption, they don’t go back.”

Gideon Strydom, the Bunny Park caretaker, said the number of dead bunnies was exaggerated.

“There was a host of people here on Saturday, why did they not find anything, then suddenly, the next day, 60 dead bunnies appeared,” said Strydom.

Leighton Edward James Pearson, a CBD resident, met with Clr Gerrie Kriek (Ward 27) and Jacques Meiring (Gauteng Federal Council representative and Ward 27 branch chair) on July 23 to discuss the plans forward for the Bunny Park, with the DA being heavily involved.

The DA, including Kriek and Meiring, handed out brochures at the park on Saturday (July 25) and answered any questions the public might have on the Bunny Park and the plans forward.

“We have permission to remove some of the bunnies now, as there are too many,” said Kriek.

“We brought a veterinarian along on Sunday and determined that 90 per cent of the animals are in good condition, the main issue is the bunnies.”

Forrest-Smith also organised the removal of an underfed lamb from the Bunny Park, which was taken away on Monday (July 27).

Kriek and Pieter Engelbrecht, a veterinarian from Bapsfontein Animal Hospital, accompanied Forrest-Smith to remove the lamb.

“The mother doesn’t produce enough milk for the lamb at the moment, so it will have to be cared for, for about three months, before returning to the Bunny Park,” said Engelbrecht.

Forrest-Smith said volunteers will meet at the park every Sunday at 10am to help clean up and remove sick animals.
