EMPD guards councillor’s residence

The EMPD have been guarding Clr Mary Goby's residence in Western Extension for the past three weeks, since she received a death threat.

Goby told the City Times she received a threatening phone call from an unknown number about three weeks ago.

“I got a call from an unknown number and he said: ‘We know where you stay and you are next’,” said Goby, of Ward 28.

The councillor reported the matter to the EMPD.

“This action was prompted by threats to her property and life following electricity cuts in Farramere Gardens,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“The residents are allegedly accusing Goby of being responsible for the cuts.”

The councillor said she is entitled to the service as she is a civil servant, but hopes the need for the protection ends soon.

Kgasago did not say for how long Goby would receive protection.

Goby said the residents in Farrarmere Gardens collectively owe the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) R1.6-million in outstanding rent, sewerage and water utilities.
