Hopping to bunnies’ aid

The community rallied to improve the lives of animals at the Benoni Bunny Park on Mandela Day, following a week-long furore over the conditions of animals and facilities at the park.

A group of more than 150 people came together on Saturday, to donate food for the animals.

This came after it was revealed that the animals, especially the bunnies in the park are suffering from a lack medical attention and, allegedly, a shortage of food.

The community was mobilised after concerned Rynfield resident Leighton Pearson created a Facebook page with the purpose of seeking help to improve conditions at the park and the state of the animals.

Pearson said he was quite amazed by the response he received to the Facebook page.

“Today’s outcome was better than I expected,” he said at the park, on Saturday.

“This is just the start of a whole new beginning and, going forward, it will be a big change in our community.”

On the day, the community delivered food to the park and vowed to continue making contributions and to volunteer their time to clean the grounds on a monthly basis.

“I have fond memories of my childhood in this park and I would love to volunteer my time to come and clean it,” said a resident of Crystal Park, Joshua Ndlovu.

Jessica Green, of Northmead, said it was great to see the community come together to support the initiative.

She added that the public must be educated on what exactly to feed the bunnies.

On Sunday, more community members continued to volunteer their time to clean the park and feed the animals.

DA Gauteng Federal Council representative and ward 27 branch chairman Jacques Meiring said that the DA would be meeting with all the key players and the Bunny Park Rescue team on July 22, to discuss a way forward and possible reforms to improve the lives of the animals.

“We will do everything in our power to solve the problem and we are open to any help from the community,” he added.
