Suspected illegal miners arrested with gold dust

Five men between the ages of 18 and 38 were arrested on July 19, in Benoni.

They were found in possession of 11 bags of gold dust.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago said the suspects were arrested when officers were investigating a shooting within the N12, Putfontein informal settlement.

“A blue VW Polo was closely monitored as it left the informal settlement, travelling towards Benoni,” added Kgasago.

“As the vehicle reached Golden Drive, the Metro Police closed in on the vehicle and arrested all five occupants.

“The vehicle in which the men were travelling had several bullet holes.”

The Metro Police searched the vehicle and 11 bags of suspected gold dust were found.

A case of illegal mining was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

All the men were detained at the Benoni SAPS and will appear at the Benoni Magistrates Court soon.
