Real Man Movement shows love to the kids

In the spirit of Mandela Day, members of the Real Man Movement (RMM) provided 65 kids from Kingsway, Etwatwa and Daveyton with food packs, party packs and a day full of fun activities.

Northfield Methodist Church created a warm and welcoming atmosphere and lent a helping hand by providing food and clothing for the kids.

Motivational talks and testimonies from Daveyton SAPS communications officer Sgt Constance Moalusi and RMM member Calvin Bantham added a personal touch to the event, with performances by a group of ex-inmates, who call themselves Siyakhana Culture Group, from Daveyton, who performed realistic scenarios that involved crime.

A special message was delivered to the kids, reminding them to never settle for less, regardless of their situation, they are special and can do whatever they put their mind to, crime is not the road that they would like to walk.

Great emphasis was placed on educating the children about crime and the effects of crime in their communities.

The ex-convicts used the event as a platform to call upon the community to accept them back into the community and accept their assistance in helping to fight crime.

“Give us a chance to prove ourselves, we have changed and we are not monsters,” said Calvin Bantham.

Principal social worker at Modderbee correctional services Nokuthula Ndlela said she was happy with the outcome of the event and that the inmates would be pleased to hear the end results.

The Daveyton SAPS, stakeholders and the Modderbee Correctional services were all in attendance in support of this initiative.

Making a choice to rehabilitate themselves and others who were incarcerated with the inmates at Modderbee correctional centre took it upon themselves to start the Real Man Movement.

The inmates decided to ”man-up” and take responsibility for their actions and change the perspectives of the community once they were released.

Showing remorse, with the aim of educating children and protecting the community, is the goal that RMM is hoping to achieve.

The initiative was to give back and help protect the community that they wronged.
