Police open fire on hijacker

The Benoni Flying Squad fired shots on the N12 highway last night (July 14) as they were pursuing a man who hijacked a vehicle in Daveyton only minutes earlier.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said a man was hijacked in his VW Polo on the corner of Eiselen and Nkabinde streets, at around 9.30pm.

“Apparently the victim was dropping his girlfriend off when he was approached by an unknown man in possession of a firearm,” said Sekele.

“He forcefully took the vehicle and drove out of Daveyton.”

The victim reported the incident to the SAPS and the dispatch at 10111 gave a lookout for the car.

Sekele said the Flying Squad spotted the car on Kingsway Road and gave chase onto the N12 highway.

Police fired shots at the hijacker, who later stopped at the Snake Road off-ramp and ran away.

The hijacker was not arrested.

A case of hijacking has been opened at the Daveyton Police Station.
