Man arrested for perjury, armed robbery and hijacking

A man was arrested on July 14 after he reported a false hijacking at the Actonville police station.

Lieut Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said the man and three accomplices committed an armed robbery with a stolen vehicle on the corner of Atlas and Paul Smit Roads.

“The suspects were then followed by a private witness until they drove the car to the Actonville hostel,” said Sekele.

The witness to the armed robbery immediately alerted the police.

Surprisingly one of the suspects later went to the police station out of his own accord.

“The suspect went to the Actonville police station to open a case of hijacking claiming he was hijacked on Liverpool Road while on his way to Benoni.”

Police went to the scene of the armed robbery with the suspect who claimed that the vehicle used in the armed robbery was the same vehicle that was hijacked from him.

The police did not find the man’s story credible and contacted the rightful owner of the stolen vehicle to come to the station to identify the suspect as the hijacker.

Shortly thereafter the suspect confessed to both the hijacking and armed robbery.

The three other men suspected of the armed robbery have not been arrested yet.

A case of armed robbery, hijacking and perjury has been opened against the suspect at the Benoni SAPS.
