Man escapes from three armed hijackers

A man wriggled himself out of a potential hostage situation during a hijacking in Mackenzie Park yesterday (July 8).

Phillip Mtsenga, an employee at Safo’s Cars, Dewald Hattingh Road, was busy parking a BMW outside the shop for display, at around 9.10am, when three men approached the car.

Before he had switched the engine off, two of the men, armed with firearms, threatened to shoot him.

The men got into the car and pushed Mtsenga to the backseat where he was forced to stay by the third suspect who was standing outside the vehicle.

Mtsenga quickly opened the door, causing the suspect to lose his balance.

Mtsenga took his chance to escape and ran into the shop while the men drove off in the BMW.

“The car was recovered several hours later at Modderbee Prison,” said Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS communication officer.

Mtsenga shared his experience with the City Times and said: “I was in shock while they were there, but calmed down as soon as I got back to the shop and they drove off”.

“I’ll keep my job at Safo’s Cars, but I am a little scared now.”

No shots were fired and no-one was injured during the incident.

A case of car hijacking has been opened at Benoni Police Station.

No arrests had been made at the time of going to press.
