Accident claims loving couple

Husband and wife Trevor (84) and Ashne (79) Hollis were inseparable right until their death.

“They were always together,” said their daughter, Cindy McCall-Peat.

“They did everything together and they died together.

“Dying together would have been the way my dad would have wanted to go.”

The Farrarmere couple, who were married for 55 years, died in a car accident on June 20, on Van Reenen’s Pass.

They were travelling in their Ford F1 international, named Bosvark, when the right-side tyre blew, causing the vehicle to fall down an 11m cliff.

They died on impact.

The pair were en route to Shelly Beach to catch shad with one of Trevor’s friends.

The daughter said her parents’ African Grey parrot, Jonsey (which they had had for 29 years) was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, but survived the ordeal.

McCall-Peat told the City Times her parents’ death has left a big gap in her family’s life.

She praised them for living their lives to the fullest.

The couple was married on February 10, 1960, in Primrose, Germiston.

They moved to Northmead in the same year and stayed there until Trevor took early retirement in 1989, when they moved to St Francis, in the Eastern Cape.

Trevor worked at Delfos Atlas Copco as a fitter and turner for 30 years.

Ashne worked for Morgan’s Gas as a bookkeeper.

Trevor and Ashne relocated to Benoni in 2001, to be closer to family.

McCall-Peat said her parents were avid travellers.

“They lived life to the fullest and the family spent many adventurous holidays together, where a love for the outdoors and experiencing new places was passed on to both their daughters,” said McCall-Peat.

“Trevor was a keen golfer and Ashne loved her garden, sewing and quilting.”

Both enjoyed fishing and travelled to the Zambezi, Lydenburg, Mozambique and Namibia, among other places, to live out their passion.

The pair leave behind McCall-Peat, her sister Inga Barnes and grandchildren Cassy (27) and Lloyd (20) Barnes, and Lauren (22) and Chesney (20) McCall-Peat.

A memorial service was held at the Northfield Methodist Church on June 26.
