Delay in cruelty to animals case

The Daveyton Magistrates Court is awaiting the review of a charge sheet before they can proceed with the case against a man who is accused of beating a dog with a golf club.

Bokang Matjelo (39) appeared in court on July 3, which was due to be the start of his trial.

He is charged with cruelty to animals for allegedly striking his neighbour’s dog, Tobie (a female Jack Russell), in Daveyton, on March 2.

The suspect allegedly hit Tobie for no reason.

The dog’s eyeball had to be removed to prevent it from rotting and there was a 5cm piercing in her chest, which affected her mobility.

Magistrate Bhoola postponed the matter to July 31 to allow a high court judge to review the charge sheet.

Bhoola said there were “procedural defects” on the charge sheet.

Matjelo will remain in custody in Modderbee Prison.
