Police open fire, wound man found to be holding toy gun

Police shot a man in the left hip this morning at the corner of Bunyan Street and the off-ramp of the N12 highway.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Tryna Martiz said the incident occurred at 5am when police stopped four suspicious looking men in a Toyota sedan.

The car had a Mozambican number plate.

She said the SAPS tried to stop the four men when they got out of the car and scattered.

One of the men pointed a firearm at police after which they opened fire.

The SAPS fired two warning shots and fired two at the man, one of which penetrated his hip.

The man was transported to the Tambo Memorial Hospital in a stable condition.

The SAPS later discovered the suspect was holding a toy gun.

Gloves and a plasma TV were found in the vehicle.

A case of possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of housebreaking implements and suspected stolen property and a fraud case has been opened at the Benoni SAPS.
