New look for NLB

The National Lotteries Board (NBL) launched their new look at the Music Academy of Gauteng, in Putfontein, on June 29.

The Music Academy of Gauteng is one of the few remaining community-based music education schools sponsored by the NBL.

This school provides much needed arts education for youth coming from disadvantaged families.

The founder of the academy, Johnny Mekoa, said that when the lottery came on board for the academy, everything changed for the aspiring musicians, many of whom could not afford to buy a saxophone.

”They have really helped us achieve our dream,” he said.

With lottery funds they built a library and a recording studio for the young musicians who use the facility, some of whom may have been on the streets taking drugs without the discipline and hope that music provides.

Guests were surprised by a performance from veteran trombonist and composer Jonas Gwangwa, playing Flowers of the Nations, to teach and inspire young people musically.

The re-branding of the NLB follows the controversial change of operator from Gidani to Ithuba on June 1, which has left many punters complaining that they are battling to get their tickets for the draws.

National Lotteries Commission CEO, Charlotte Mampane, said it is more than just a new name.

”It is a renewed commitment to being the catalyst for social upliftment, said Mampane.

“The launch marks a new dawn for the 16 years running of the organisation, which has distributed close to R20bn thus far.”

The launch was attended by several well known figuers, including Arthur Mafukade, Luthuli Dlamini, MEC Faith Mazibuko, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Mzwandile Masina, as well as Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.
