A splendid 65 years of marriage for Douglas and Doreen

Doreen (86) and Douglas (89) Adams recently celebrated 65 years of marriage.

The couple, who is originally from Umhlanga, in KwaZulu-Natal, was married on June 23, 1950.

They were brought together by their love for church and music.

Doreen and Douglas used to belong to musical choirs and a chance encounter led to a friendship – which later developed into a relationship.

Since then, the couple has sung a number of duets together.

Douglas worked as a hall sale manufacturing optician for 40 years, and Doreen worked in an outfitting shop, but spent a number of years at home caring for their children, Susan Spangenberg and Gordon Adams.

The couple live in Northmead, with their daughter, Susan.

Even though they do not have grandchildren, they have five furry companions.

Douglas said he loves that Doreen is understanding and always supportive.

His many talents include singing opera, and he was a member of Napac (Natal Ammeter Performing Arts Council).

“I would go out for rehearsals, sometimes till late at night, but she never complained,” said Douglas.

The couple said whenever they had conflict, they would agree to differ.

“I respected everything we did and we always did everything together,” said Doreen.

She is an avid reader and particularly loves novels, while Douglas enjoys spending time in the garden.

The couple said communication is key to the survival of their marriage.

“Our advice to young couples is to always discuss what is right and wrong – and to respect each other’s opinions,” they added.

Their daughter, Susan, said she couldn’t have wished for better parents, because of the love and support they have always shown.
