East Rand Youth Orchestra visits Benoni

The East Rand Youth Orchestra (ERYO) warmed up the hall at Hoërskool Hans Moore on June 20.

About 200 people, all of whom were welcomed with a glass of sherry, attended the event.

“Not only the sherry, but also the music warmed the hearts of the concert-goers as the orchestra was playing throughout the evening,” said Janet Dixon, organiser of the gathering.

“The orchestra masterfully entertained the audience with music that appealed to every taste.”

They started the evening’s musical line-up by playing “Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree”.

Then the evening was given a taste of Italian opera by tenor Nicci Giuricich (guest singer).

Additionally, Stephan Kersop gave a solo violin performance, accompanied by his mother, Elsa Kelsop (guest player) on piano.

The ERYO was founded in 1978 and Pienaar Fourie (conductor) has been with the orchestra since its inception.

Currently the orchestra consists of 34 members, the ages of whom vary from nine to 24 years old.

The group’s members are drawn from areas across the East Rand, including Daveyton.
