It’s become easier to donate to charities

Donating to charity will soon become far more efficient than ever before.

Zapper, a smartphone payment app, was launched in South Africa in the beginning of last year, at first being used only by businesses.

According to Zapper marketing manager Maliza Booysen, the initiative was launched last year and 23 charities have already applied to use the platform.

“The process is easy, just download the app, scan the QR code, confirm the amount and the payment goes through,” said Booysen.

Members of the public can download the app from the Zapper website and, whenever an organisation displays a Zapper QR code, it can be scanned using the app to pay or donate.

Charity organisations can apply on the Zapper website or via email.

The app allows for charity organisations to receive the full donation, as opposed to earlier SMS-based mobile donation systems.

South African charity organisations already signed up for the Zapper donation platform include LIV Village, Foodbank SA, the Zip-Zap Circus School Trust, Doctors On Mission and one of the latest additions, Pug Rescue SA.

Pug Rescue is a non-profit organisation (NPO) based in the Benoni North Agricultural Holdings, which provides shelter, food and re-homing for dogs.

Cheryl Gaw, president of Pug Rescue SA, said the organisation was registered for Zapper donations only a few weeks ago.

“We haven’t had much time to test it yet, but I have a lot of faith in it,” she said.

“Initiatives like the Zapper donation channel will ensure that we have a convenient offering available to members of the public who would like to support the work we do.

“I am very excited about the app and believe once we start driving towards making the public more aware of it and how to use it, this will be very successful.”
