CPF election postponed, members investigated by police

The Benoni Community Police Forum (CPF) executive committee election has been postponed for the second time, following at least two investigations into the conduct of its members.

The election was due to be held in the Benoni Council Chambers on Saturday, June 27.

Benoni SAPS acting cluster commander Brig Poobalan Subbiah said he, along with the office of the MMC, decided to postpone the meeting.

Subbiah told the City Times on Friday afternoon that the Hawks are investigating the “unethical conduct” of a member of the Benoni CPF.

A separate investigation, which is being handled by Subbiah’s office at the cluster level, is investigating a case of attempted murder and an assault case with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The acting cluster commander said the docket has not yet been registered and police are still gathering statements.

He would not be drawn into saying how many people were being investigated, but did say the person(s) is a member of the Benoni CPF.

Benoni CPF executive chairperson Reza Patel told the City Times on Friday afternoon that he was interviewed by the Hawks about certain members of the Benoni CPF.

He added that he does not know who or what is being investigated.

Patel expressed his concern that the CPF’s years of hard work will be undone by a few “rotten apples” and that the community will distrust the forum.

Clr Mary Goby, who is the DA shadow MMC for community safety and a member of the

electoral commission for the Benoni CPF election, said the commission has been left in the dark.

“I would like to know what is going on,” she added.

She said she received notification of the meeting’s cancellation via a WhatsApp message.

Goby wants to know why the meeting was cancelled and why the commission was not informed of the postponement.

Subbiah said the investigations should be complete in July, after which a new date will be set for the Benoni CPF executive election.
