Without water when there is load shedding?

The high demand for water, coupled with load shedding, is the reason for homes experiencing reduced water pressure when the electricity goes off.

According to a reliable source, load shedding affects the Northmead reservoir’s ability to be replenished to meet water demand.

The reservoir supplies water to Farrarmere, Northmead, Brentwood Park, Goedeburg and parts of Rynfield, to name some of the suburbs.

The source said the diesel pump at the Northmead reservoir is unable to meet the demand.

He added that a second diesel pump broke and is in the process of being repaired.

The City Times was told one of the three motors which run on electricity is out of order and that, if electricity is off for more than two hours, pressure is affected.

Webb Street resident Rod Scheepers said he is without any water at his home 60 to 70 per cent of the time when Farrarmere (and a section of Northmead) experience load shedding.

“We have no water at all, then, when it comes back, it’s brown and spits and coughs,” said the Northmead resident.

He said water takes around an hour to return to his taps after Farrarmere’s power is switched back on.

The City Times had not received comment from Ekurhuleni at the time of going to print, on Tuesday.
